I was inspired for this cover by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an Austrian artist I have a great fondness for
Dante's half sister gets her final bow.
The cover that launched the last phase of Nikolai Dante's exploits. I was helped on this by my then Intern Edwin Huang. He modelled for the hands and did the page layout for me.
This cover was all about Dante coming to realise that being the opressor just isn't cool.
I'm still fond of the colour on this. The drawing of the figure is too elongated.
The companion to the #1 cover
This is the 2nd version of this cover that I did. It's straight up shlock horror and refers to a scene inside the book which is still one of the ickiest things I've ever drawn.
The cover for the Simon & Schuster edition of the first volume of Nikolai Dante's adventures. This is the 3rd cover I've done for this collection and by far the best.
This is the very last cover I've done for Nikolai Dante. I opted to do something a bit radical and not have the central character on his own cover , or indeed anyone at all. It's a shot taken of a sunrise from the front of the villa where Dante finally defeats the Tsar towards the church in which he is supposed to be getting married and crowned. It's symbolically a new day, a new world, but is it a world that Dante has any place in?
The cover to volume 10 of the series. To the right in the back you can see a drawing of Robbie Morrison , the series writer. It took him 3 years to notice it.
This is the cover for the Octopus editions first printing of this collection. It was drawn in 2 pieces ( my scanner was only A4 ) and put together in my Acorn RiscPC where I coloured it. I still like this cover a lot. Though I don't think it was action packed enough for some.
I like this cover, it's simple, punchy and makes a reference to the classic Dredd cover of the Badge with a bullet hole in it.. I was especially happy with the flame effect.
Then cover to an early story that was drawn by the pre-Walking Dead Charlie Adlard. I used a lot of photo-compositing in this cover. Using my trusty Acorn RiscPC
One of everyones favourite characters from the series playing with her pets in the bath. There were more pets in the printed version. Somehow the naked lady covered in more bugs is more acceptable than the naked lady covered in less bugs.
This is a very early cover which turned into the default Dante image for some years. The Editor wasn't initially very keen because it seemed too static. I still like it. This is another one done using my Acorn RiscPC before I was forced to go over to a PC and Photoshop like everyone else.
This was drawn to accompany a Dante vampire story inside that was drawn by Steve Yeowell.
This was the first cover I did after coming back to Dante in 2006. It was deliberately celebratory. I was trying to go for a 20s Deco styling in the strip at the time , to symbolise the story turning a corner after the war. While the Deco style is clean and modern and seems to embody change , it also carries with it the whiff of totalitarianism. Hence the stalinist portrait of the Tsar in the sky behind.
I wanted to try a bit more painterly approach to this cover, using a lot more skin reflections. It's good to experiment. I'm quite pleased with how it came out.

I like drawing likenesses.
Drawn for his 70th birthday celebration. Sadly his last.
From an interview in Heeb Magazine. Before he became the king of the geek-o-verse.
A portrait of the writer for Heeb Magazine
Done as a test of my wife's new iPad. The general opinion was that it was not a creative tool. I would dispute that.
I made the forehead too small...like always.
A sketch with Copic Markers
A great artist and purveyor of mine-bending and inspiring comics. I think I may have over-egged this one a bit.
Drawn to mark the great lady's death. It's a mark of her iconic beauty that she is so easy to simplify.
One of several Hamilton portraits here. We sit next to each other every day. How could I not draw him.
Actress and media animal Nathalie Kim.
Again , too much chin , not enough forehead....sigh
What was never discussed was that he was a very handsome man. An idiot certainly, but you can see where his charisma came from.
A scrappy sketch of a band that never polished a damned thing.
On the occasion of their 80th birthday.
My buddy Tim.
A great old character
He's so easy to draw.
From the movie Zardoz. A truly amazing piece of cinema.
One of my very favourite movie stars. This is a Copic marker sketch
Drawn to mark her passing. A very sad loss.
My studio mate Robin. By FAR the most glamorous member of my studio. I may be guilty of a bit of 'orientalism' here. I still really like this drawing. Robin is a fine comics writer/artist and fabric designer.
A very easy caricature this one.
Another former studio mate. Steve Ellis is a formidable comic artist and fantasy painter.
A fully painted illustration. Drawn for the Drawbridge Blog. I freely admit that this is not at all a warm-up sketch and that I took far more time on this than was wise.
Drawn is a vaguely Sergio Toppi inspired style.
My friend, a formidable comics auteur and very very tall.
Comics scribe Ben McCool. I'm being a bit cruel here I admit. I only ever see Ben in Pubs though, it's his natural environment.
My very favourite writer. Drawn in some shock after the announcement of his terminal cancer.
Yes I like ManMen.
So far she's working out to be a very fine Dr Who companion. I have a colour version of this I may finish one day.
Drawn to commemorate his death. Trying to refine and minimalize the great man , in the manner that he himself would have approved of.
Again with the chin too big and the tiny forehead. I am annoyed with myself over this. Ms. Lansbury herself has a very fine chin. I've seen her in person and I know this to be true.
